- W1539401828 abstract "We present measurements of the solar wind taken near the heliographic equatorial plane by the Voyager 2 spacecraft launched in 1977. We summarize solar wind proton observations from 1 AU to the current position of Voyager 2 near 30 AU. 200-day averages of the radial component of the velocities, number densities, flux densities, and dynamic pressures show the solar cycle variation of these parameters. The dynamic pressure maximizes in the declining phase of the solar cycle, and the pressure varies by approximately a factor of two over the solar cycle. This variation implies a 40% change in average position of the termination shock. Although the details of how rapidly these changes in pressure would be communicated from the termination shock to the heliopause are not clear, the interaction of the wind with the interstellar medium must be dynamic. The heliopause's radial motion appears to be rapid enough to change its interaction with the interstellar medium from subsonic to supersonic during the solar cycle. Averages over shorter time intervals show even more variation in dynamic pressure. Large changes of number density and temperature are clearly seen in the detailed data. The variations in the meridional component of flow velocity are also discussed; they maximize near solar minimum when the tilt of the dipolar solar magnetic field is small. All the observations were made near the heliographic equatorial plane, and a true global picture of heliospheric conditions remains to be derived." @default.
