- W153966585 abstract "This chapter discusses active immunization against sperm and sperm autoantigens. It is generally believed that isolation of spermatozoa in the various genital tubes and tracts may cause their antigens to be ignored by the immune system. The real situation may not actually be as simple as that and there are reasons to think that several soluble and diffusible autoantigens of spermatozoal origin are able to leave the genital tract, especially in the epididymis and the uterus. Furthermore, anti-spermatozoa natural autoantibodies are often found in sera from males and females of various species. This would imply a well adapted system of immune regulation, preventing, in the vast majority of individuals, a detrimental auto- or isoimmune anti-spermatozoa reaction to take place. In a few cases, however, and for hitherto unexplained reasons, auto- or isoimmune reactions against spermatozoa autoantigens take place in correlation with signs of infertility. Deliberate immunization against spermatozoa and spermatozoa autoantigens usually results in a full set of immune reactions, both humoral and cellular, in males and in females. This has seemed to be a reasonable basis for an immunological approach to contraception, provided that the right, or most appropriate, autoantigen was used." @default.
