- W1539691311 abstract "Protecting the environment and making efficient use of natural resources are two of the most pressing demands in the present stage of socio-economic development in India. Fossil fuels burnt at thermal power stations emit gaseous and solid components which adversely affect the atmosphere and water and soil resources. Air pollution is prevented by maximum ash collection using efficient electrostatic precipitators and tall chimneys, effective cleaning of flue gases and proper combustion process in boiler furnace. The discharge of liquid waste from power station can cause great harm to water resources due to their chemical contamination and heat content. Today we are facing acute shortage of the raw water because the water available in the rivers is getting diverted for irrigation and for drinking purposes. In future there will be further reduction in the water available in the rivers. Most of our rivers are not perenial. If monsoon fails in summer, water available becomes acute. With ever increasing rate of industrilisation in India, the problem of abatement of pollution is becoming more and more critical. Public opinion in favour of pollution free areas is becoming stronger day by day. Recycle is becoming attractive as water is available at a premium, discharge of waste is difficult without extensive treatment and once treated, the treated water is too valuable to throw away. This paper deals about the various waste generated in the power station, suggestions to reduce them by good house keeping, adopting improved technology for disposal/recycle to achieve zero discharge from power station and BHEL's contribution to achieve this important national goal for the survival of mankind." @default.
