- W1539804559 abstract "This chapter focuses on some long-standing convictions regarding the separation of the grand vezir's office from the imperial household. By the mid-17th century, however, a somewhat different pattern was emerging as at least some princesses began to be given in marriage to their father's boon companions. A new kind of court society appeared to be taking shape, one provisionally dominated not so much by autonomously established grandees making their regular way up the Ottoman bureaucracy, as by courtiers jostling around the sultan. The weddings and palaces reserved for princesses in the historical peninsula became the last word in pomp and circumstance. The value of all gifts given and received, the way they were presented, the festivities running through each wedding - in short, all that was expected from such a union - came to be regarded as extremely important, indeed essential for both parties.
