- W154019071 abstract "At first glance, a chapter on theories of personality and aging may seem misplaced in a text on geriatric neuropsychology. Cognition, after all, represents the construct of particular interest for clinical and experimental investigation within neuropsychology. We are developing an ever growing understanding of the age-related effects on various cognitive processes such as attention and concentration, sensorimotor integration, visual perception and construction, new learning and memory, language, novel problem-solving, and cognitive flexibility. We are attuned to the potential age-related effects associated with the psychometric evaluation of cognitive processes. Although extensive age-related norms for many of our clinical measures of cognitive functioning are still lacking, it is an issue that is well recognized and directly addressed in the literature. There are ongoing efforts to provide age-appropriate norms or other correction procedures that can be applied to our cognitive data. We are also in an exciting era where neuroanatomical and neuropsychological correlates are more readily available, even to the day-to-day clinician. Procedures such as computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), and electroencephalogram (EEG)/event-related potentials (ERP) have not only given us the opportunity to understand the structural and functional processes of neuropathological conditions, but have also allowed us to investigate the relationship between brain structure, brain function, and cognition among normal, non-brain-injured individuals." @default.
