- W15405589 abstract "ABSTRACT Dislocation theory usually deals either with dislocations in a contiuum or with crystal dislocations. These two alternatives also appear in applications of the dislocation theory to fracture. The purely continuum theory of dislocations has been used principally in stress analysis and in fracture mechanics whilst lattice dislocations have been considered in studies of the micromechanisms of cracking. In this paper we first review the use of dislocations in stress analysis and linear elastic-fracture mechanics. In particular, we discuss in more detail, calculations of the stress intensity factors for complicated crack configurations. The dislocation models used in elastic-plastic fracture mechanics are then summarized and their impact on the interpretation of the CTOD and critical J c , discussed. Specifically, the contribution of the dislocation interpretation towards understanding the phenomenon of warm pre-stressing is shown. Applications of dislocation models in fatigue and creep fracture are also presented. The mechanisms of microcrack nucleation and propagation based on pile-up models are first discussed in the part dealing with microscopic models of brittle fracture. A new model of microcrack propagation in which the bond breaking and dislocation emission at the microcrack tip are regarded as concomitant processes is then presented." @default.
