- W1541128479 abstract "The flavonoid pathway leading to anthocyanins has been well-characterized in a number of model systems, including maize, petunia, snapdragon and, more recently, Arabidopsis. Genetic approaches have identified many of the regulatory and structural genes required for the synthesis of these important plant pigments. Analysis of mutant lines has also provided evidence for biological functions of flavonoids other than those related to pigmentation. In all species examined to date, expression of the pathway is highly regulated in response to developmental and environmental cues and occurs, at least in part, at the level of transcription. The assembly of flavonoid enzymes into a membrane-bound macromolecular complex may provide yet another important mechanism for controlling pathway flux and determining the relative levels of specific endproducts. Understanding these diverse aspects of flavonoid metabolism is crucial for efforts to engineer this system for horticultural, nutritional, and agronomic improvement of plants." @default.
