- W1542374400 abstract "Publisher Summary The ability to examine the molecular details of membrane transport phenomena was greatly advanced with the introduction of the techniques for isolation of plasma membrane vesicles. In a typical experiment, the transport of ions across a membrane vesicle is examined over time, and the rate coefficient serves as a macroscopic measure of the membrane permeability. Using this method, investigators have examined directly many important properties of ion transporters and identified and reconstituted the proteins that underlie the transport function. This chapter discusses the rapid-reaction methods that have been adapted for membrane transport studies. These methods are particularly suited for studying ion channels in which the time course of the ion flux is usually less than 1 sec. The rapid-reaction apparatus method can be designed and adjusted to fit a variety of needs." @default.
