- W1542676944 abstract "This study examined the effects of two different frequencies ofTranscutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) on chronicallypainful and stiff osteoarthritic knees. The effects studied werechanges in pain state, changes in stiffness state, changes incircumference, and changes in range of movement.Three groups, each of 20 subjects, were given a single 30 minuteapplication of TENS: the first group received High Rate (Conventional)TENS, the second group received strong Burst Mode (Low Rate) TENS, andthe third (control) group received a placebo application using thesame active TENS with nonfunctioning leads. Each TENS frequency wasapplied for the same length of time, at tolerable intensities, tothe same four acupuncture points around the knee.Measurements of joint pain and stiffness using Absolute VisualAnalogue Scales were made immediately before and after the TENSapplication. Objective measurements of joint circumference and rangeof movement were also made immediately before and after the test,using a tape measure and goniometer respectively. The length of timethe post-test pain and stiffness relief lasted was determined by thesubject reporting when his normal pain and stiffness returned.These reports were collected 24 hours after the test.The aim of the experiment was to establish the hypothesis thatstrong Burst Mode TENS would produce significantly greater and longerlasting effects than those produced by High Rate TENS.The results from the study did not entirely support the hypothesis,but the significance of the findings suggested that continuinginvestigation into TENS action is warranted." @default.
