- W1542874989 abstract "A degree of ovarian hyperstimulation is inherent in any ovarian stimulation protocol for assisted reproduction techniques. One of the aims of monitoring ovarian stimulation is to predict and attempt to prevent ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), and a number of ovarian response markers have been evaluated for their ability to predict the development of OHSS. In the absence of universally agreed and validated criteria, each in vitro fertilization unit should have their own protocol for identifying patients at high risk of developing OHSS during ovarian stimulation. Cycle cancelation by stopping the gonadotropin injections and withholding the human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), is the only guaranteed preventive measure. The trigger for the development of OHSS is the hCG injection, which acts through the production of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Dopamine agonists have been shown to inhibit VEGF receptor phosphorylation and thereby decrease vascular permeability, which is a major step in the pathophysiology of OHSS." @default.
