- W1544286887 abstract "Whisker growth has been observed on metal films and finishes. Some research work had been performed on the driving force and growth process on whiskers. Recently such work has been reviewed, and some of the results are discussed in this chapter. The growth rates of whiskers are hastened by a wide range of factors including composition of the finish, plating chemistry, plating process, substrate, and the application environment. Several types of lead-free finishes have been evaluated by the industry and matte tin is most frequently selected because it offers the optimal balance among manufacturability, reliability, solderability, and cost. The chapter focuses on pure tin, and more specifically, matte tin. It reviews the driving forces of whisker growth, and discusses the dominant stress generation mechanism observed from the acceleration tests. Finally, the chapter summarizes some of the mitigation techniques to reduce the risk of whisker growth for electronic systems. Controlled Vocabulary Terms crystal growth; environmental factors; whiskers (crystal)" @default.
