- W1544420244 abstract "The U.S. Soil Survey has existed since 1899 for the express purpose of mapping the soil resources of the nation and providing land-use interpretations for the people. Through its work, the Survey has contributed to developing an understanding of appropriate uses of the varied soils of the United States and disseminating that understanding to farmers, agricultural scientists, governments, and other users of the land. The survey's descriptions of soil types and recommendations for land use, however, depend for their accuracy on adequate scientific knowledge of the principles of soil formation. To obtain that scientific knowledge, the Soil Survey has supported a research program in conjunction with its mapping activities throughout most of its history. One line of research pursued by the Soil Survey program, known as soil geomorphology, studies the relationship of soils to the geology and geomorphology of an area. These studies provide fundamental information about the developmental processes responsible for soils occurring on specific components of the landscape. Pedologists (soil scientists) and geologists conduct soil-geomorphology studies at field locations representing various landscape and climatic regions chosen for investigation. At these field sites, the researchers must map the topography (land surface configuration) and underlying geology (stratigraphy), as well as the" @default.
