- W1544576100 abstract "This chapter discusses thermodynamics of line defects and basic problems of earthquake thermodynamics. It also introduces the entropy jump during an earthquake process and the presentation of the closed system of stress evolution and temperature diffusion equations. Basic thermodynamic relations for line defects (dislocations and vacant dislocations) are derived under the assumption of a dense network of defects forming a kind of superlattice. The thermodynamic functions of line defects can be associated with defects in the superlattice. The transition from equilibrium thermodynamics to that of irreversible processes involves difficulties in defining the fundamental thermodynamic quantities in states of nonequilibrium. The efforts to overcome these difficulties include the postulate of the local equilibrium, wherein it is postulated that entropy depends on the same variables outside equilibrium. The Gibbs potential depends on the square of the Burgers vector. It neglects the inelastic energy associated with the core of the dislocation. There is some analogy between the problem of defining a Gibbs potential and the concept of the surface energy introduced in the context of cracks by Griffith." @default.
