- W1544657589 abstract "The photo-oxidation of polystyrene irradiated at 253.7 nm at a pressure of 600 Torr oxygen has been studied quantitatively. Quantum yields have been measured for most chemical reactions observed. It has thus been shown that only about 4% of the oxygen absorbed ultimately results in chain scissions. These occur with formation of an acetophenone-type end-group and an unsaturated chain-end simultaneously. Unsaturated chain-ends are then starting points for the building of sequences of conjugated double bonds (polyenes). About 30% of the absorbed oxygen is transformed into carbon dioxide without any permanent chain scission. Since energy is absorbed almost exclusively by the phenyl chromophores of the polymer, most of the observed reactions occur only because of energy transfer to photo-reactive products. La photo-oxydation du polystyrène irradié à 253,7 nm sous une pression de 600 Torr en oxygène a été étudiée quantitativement. Les rendements quantiques de la plupart des réactions observées ont été déterminés. On a montré ainsi que seule une petite fraction (environ 4%) de l'oxygène absorbé conduit finalement à des ruptures de chaîne. Celles-ci se produisent en formant simultanément un groupe terminal de type acétophénone et une extrémité de chaîne non saturée. Les extrémités de chaîne non saturées constituent ensuite des points de départ pour le développement de séquences de doubles liaisons conjuguées (polyènes). Une importante fraction de l'oxygène absorbé (environ 30%) se transforme en dioxyde de carbone sans rupture de chaîne permanente. Etant donné que l'énergic est absorbée presqu'exclusivement par les chromophores phényles du polymère la plupart des réactions observées ne peuvent se produire que grâce à un transfert d'énergie à des produits photo-réactifs." @default.
