- W1545018092 abstract "Mindfulness is a state of being nonjudgmentally present in the current moment. The social/psychological or “Western” tradition of mindfulness emphasizes actively noticing novel aspects of the environment and making active choices about how to view the environment, while the “Eastern” tradition of mindfulness emphasizes nonjudgmental acceptance of the environment. In this chapter, I review the importance of creativity in 21st century life, as well as the theoretical and empirical associations between creativity and mindfulness. Mindfulness is related to both the creative process and the human characteristics associated with high levels of creativity. Western mindfulness is associated with virtually all aspects of creativity, while Eastern mindfulness is associated with specific cognitive states that may facilitate creative idea generation. I conclude that learning and practicing mindfulness in both traditions can enhance natural creative abilities through neural, cognitive, emotional, and social mechanisms." @default.
