- W154782761 abstract "Rhetoric has three colors: white, black, and grey. White rhetoric is the Grecian agoric ideal and black rhetoric is its mockery in the form of cheap point-scoring and open deceitfulness. Both are commonly used. So, what is grey rhetoric? We contend that grey rhetoric is the most pervasive and devious kind of rhetoric in contemporary political discourse. It developed in response to changing patterns of journalistic inquisition and the omnipresence of news and public affairs programs on radio and television. It has been nurtured by the inexorable growth of 'spin' to deal with this omnipresence so that elected representatives can avoid real communication with their constituents. In this paper, we assert that white, or agoric, rhetoric is a deliberative rhetoric: that is, it was originally developed as purposeful, and incorporated persuasive techniques, and reasoned argument to urge a specific action. On the other hand, black rhetoric is mean-spirited, negatively emotional, and not focused on action. Gray rhetoric is mere words, ritualized, abundant, and unproductive. A key danger lies in its production of public cynicism - 'all words and no action - that subverts faith in the democratic process. It is agoraphobic because it repels people from public interaction. The cure - only ever partial, not absolute - lies in the hands of the Fourth Estate. Given that a crucial difference between the ancient agora and contemporary media is the modality of utterance, with mass media communication replacing direct address, journalists need to be able to counteract gray rhetoric by recognizing its form and strategic intent." @default.
