- W1548043485 abstract "This paper, from the perspectives of conversation analysis and stance theory, reports findings on how the evaluative practices employing the two descriptive terms in English, nice and good, are distinctively organized in naturally-occurring interactions. Focusing on their sequential distribution, it examines their distinct indexical properties in terms of how speakers select and manage stance objects and negotiate alignment with the addressee. Nice is indexical of the speaker’s positive stance in an ‘oblique’ way. The referent it describes, which tends to be of minor topical import, is often used as a category resource for invoking another ‘oriented-to’ referent that the speaker evaluates obliquely as the main stance object. In storytelling contexts, it serves as a resource for indexing ‘ordinariness’ in the way background settings are described, e.g., as preparatory grounds for projecting some event of ‘extraordinary’ nature. Good, in contrast, indexes the speaker’s positive and often ‘nuanced’ stance grounded in their subjective judgment, with the stance object being evaluated in terms of its generic qualities. Its use thus invokes the interactional need to negotiate alignment with the addressee in topically-sustained assessment activities, often indexing conflictual stances and resolution thereof." @default.
