- W1548333155 abstract "The switching of light by light is based on the intensity dependencies of the refractive index n or the absorption coefficient α, which are related to the real and imaginary parts of the complex third-order nonlinear susceptibility χ (3) . 3 Appropriate materials are needed with sufficiently large cubic nonlinearity and good waveguide performance, i.e., low attenuation loss denoted αgw. Usually, αgw should be less than 1 dB/cm to fabricate slab waveguide devices. Low-loss waveguides enable large device lengths, which allow sufficiently large nonlinear phase shifts even from materials with low cubic nonlinearity. Poly(para-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) and its derivatives are finding much interest because they have good film forming properties and large third- order nonlinear optical susceptibilities. 4-6 Scheme 1 shows the chemical structures of poly(2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene) (MEH-PPV) and related polymers which are substituted differently. Whereas PPV is insoluble, the substitution of MEH-PPV with branched alkyl chains renders this polymer soluble in common organic solvents enabling its purification and spin-coating of thin films. 5 Aim of this paper is to reveal systematic trends in the structure-property relations of PPV derivatives, which result from a variation of the side-chain substitution and from molecular weight. The paper will describe optical waveguide performances of polymers presented in Scheme 1. We will show that the waveguide propagation loss can vary between 30 dB/cm and less than 1 dB/cm depending on the kind of PPV and polarization state of the mode, respectively. This large variation of optical quality of the waveguides is related to the chain packing morphology of the films which is studied with transmission and reflection spectroscopy in the UV-Vis-NIR and IR spectral ranges.
