- W1548512411 abstract "This paper considers the effects of engine performance, and experimental and research work on exhaust system design. The design of an intake or exhaust system is essentially a compromise between acoustic and engine performance; thus it is very important to assess the trade-off between them. Engine performance is affected by the pressure loss, associated with the passage of gas through the intake or exhaust system, and by any gas inertia or tuning effects at the valves. At some point, detailed performance measurements will be required, which may include: (1) measurements of instantaneous pressure throughout the system; (2) accurate measurements of engine performance; (3) recordings of tailpipe and shell noise. When an engine is available, Ricardo's engineers can perform such measurements in any one of six anechoic test cells. When only complete vehicles can be made available, Ricardo's Vehicle Noise Test Dynamometer permits true 'free-field' noise tests to be performed on vehicles up to 200kW. Ricardo has investigated in detail the relative merits of each modelling approach and their implications for future developments. The nonlinear model, though better than the linear model, is by no means perfect, so that Ricardo is now researching the use of multidimensional models, based on computational fluid dynamics, to capture poorly modelled flow effects.
