- W1549382610 abstract "This chapter discusses the application of a number of the inhibition-based biosensors and biosensing systems for heavy-metal determinations in standard solution and different matrices. For determination of inhibitors (pesticides and methylmercury) based on extraction of the inhibitor by the enzyme (acethylcholinesterase or invertase) using an organic/aqueous mixture has been developed. The enzyme in aqueous phase selectively extracts the irreversible inhibitor dissolved in organic solvent at the interface of organic/aqueous phases. The best results were obtained with toluene and invertase and with hexane for acethylcholinesterase. Using the same approach, the enzyme invertase in presence of the organic phase combined with a glucose oxidase biosensor was used for methyl mercury determination in fish samples. The sensitivity and selectivity toward inhibitors and the factors (pH, buffer, enzyme, and inhibitor concentrations) affecting the analytical characteristics of these biosensors are also discussed. Biosensors based on enzyme inhibition are still limited in analytical applications because these sensor technologies are not usually able to discriminate various toxic compounds in the same sample." @default.
