- W1550081297 abstract "AbstractThis study examined the perception of adolescent-parent relationship by older and younger adolescents. It was hypothesised that there will be no significant difference in the perception of adolescent-parent relationship among older and younger adolescents. 320 adolescents drawn from both junior and senior secondaiy schools in Rivers state of Nigeria were used as participants for this study. There ages were between 11 years and 18 years. Adolescents whose ages fall between 11 and 13years were used as representative sample for younger adolescents while those who fall within the ages of 14 and 18years were used as representative sample for older adolescents. A 14-item questionnaire measuring adolescent-parent relationships was utilized to examine the quality of this relationship. Chi-square statistics was used to analyze the results which showed that early adolescents were more positive in their relationship with their parents than older ones, X^sup 2^ cal =1.37; X^sup 2^ critical = 7.815, df 3. Result of this study has implication on child- parent interaction - on the kind of control expected of parents on their children bearing in mind differences in cognitive development of adolescents of different chronological ages.Agatha Ogwo (Ph.D)Department of Psychology, Nasarawa State UniversityP.M.B. 1022, Keffi Nasarawa State, Nigeria+2348035003954ogegbu@yahoo.comINTRODUCTIONAdolescence is known as a period in human development characterized by profound psychological changes. Bancroft & Reinish (1990) defined adolescence as a period of transition between childhood and adulthood. This period according to these authors varies from culture to culture, and it is a time when individuals learn to be socially responsible for themselves and for their actions. The years of adolescence are spent on the border line between state of childhood and that of adulthood. They are still children in some aspects, yet they may be seen as adults in other aspects. Some of them grow into complete physical and mental maturity; while others are definitely children in their performances and wishes. They suffer both as individuals and as a group from these developmental imbalance and they experience the additional difficulty that the adult world fluctuates in its attitudes towards them, while the children whom they are leaving behind view them as outsiders with each step that they take towards adult behaviour or adult attitudes. No wonder researchers like Hall (1904), identified the period of adolescence as a time of storm and stress, characterized by sharp physical upheavals, and Dacey & Travers, (1996) portrayed this period as the happy days of carefree youth, a stage of life when people sow their wide oats before settling down to the more vigorous demands of adult maturity. Indeed, adolescence may be defined as the period within the life span when most of a person's biological, cognitive, psychological, and social characteristics are changing from what is typically considered childlike to what is considered adult like.Research indicates that parents play an important role in the lives of children and adolescents (Henricson & Roker, 2000; Smetana, 1999; Liddle, Rowe, Dakof & Lyke, 1998). According to Medinnus & Johnson, (1969), parents from all walks of life want their children to be happy, and despite this, there exists frictions between these adolescents and their parents. This can lead to miseiy, frustration, outrage, humiliation, sullenness, resentment and dramatic despair on both parties. Adolescence come at a time that is not usually very good for most parents, who are usually going through some crucial life adjustments of their own (Medinnus & Johnson, 1969). Most of them are in their middle adulthood, and adjusting to middle adulthood may be difficult on its own especially for the mother who may feel that her function of bearing and rearing children is coming to an end. …" @default.
