- W1550146520 abstract "Data from the 1963 1971 and 1981-84 rounds of the Mainichi Family Planning Survey were used to examine intertemporal differences in family size goals and outcomes among currently married Japanese women. There is evidence of a gradual homogenization of family size goals although younger cohorts desire slightly fewer children than older cohorts. A family size goal of 2-3 children has achieved wide acceptance. There is also evidence that family size goals and actual accomplishments are becoming increasingly homogeneous. The analysis of patterns over time suggests that Japanese women reduced their fertility to a replacement level in the 1950s enhanced the correspondence between their desires and their fertility performance in the 1960s and consolidated the experiences of the previous 2 decades in the 1970s by moving toward a norm of 2-3 children. Correlation and log linear analyses indicate that these trends held regardless of residence (urban or rural) and educational level. Mounting homogeneity in family size goals has interestingly been associated with increasing heterogeneity in the socioeconomic distribution of the Japanese population." @default.
