Subjects ingested 1, 5 and 10gm. supplemental ascorbate per day for 5 days, separated by 5 days of no supplementation. Urine ascorbate levels demonstrated variable increases with ascorbate supplementation. Ascorbate added directly to urine in vitro resulted in statistically significant but modest increases in measured oxalate. Addition of 5.68mmol./l. ascorbate increased measured urinary oxalate by 36μmol./l, implying conversion of ascorbate to oxalate during analysis. Measurement of 24-hour urinary oxalate levels with 5 and 10gm. ascorbate per day showed similar, modest increases, which could be entirely accounted for by oxalate production during analytical procedures. Thus, no genuine increase in urinary oxalate was demonstrable despite a greatly increased ascorbate intake. © 1994 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited ByAssimos D (2018) Re: Oxalate Nephropathy following Vitamin C Intake within Intensive Care UnitJournal of Urology, VOL. 199, NO. 5, (1106-1106), Online publication date: 1-May-2018.Assimos D (2018) Re: Total, Dietary, and Supplemental Vitamin C Intake and Risk of Incident Kidney StonesJournal of Urology, VOL. 196, NO. 4, (1170-1171), Online publication date: 1-Oct-2016.Assimos D (2018) Re: Ascorbic Acid Supplements and Kidney Stone Incidence among Men: A Prospective StudyJournal of Urology, VOL. 190, NO. 4, (1268-1269), Online publication date: 1-Oct-2013.TRAXER O, HUET B, POINDEXTER J, PAK C and PEARLE M (2018) Effect of Ascorbic Acid Consumption On Urinary Stone Risk FactorsJournal of Urology, VOL. 170, NO. 2, (397-401), Online publication date: 1-Aug-2003.Parivar F, Low R and Stoller M (2018) The Influence of Diet on Urinary Stone DiseaseJournal of Urology, VOL. 155, NO. 2, (432-440), Online publication date: 1-Feb-1996.Curhan G, Willett W, Rimm E and Stampfer M (2018) A Prospective Study of the Intake of Vitamins C and B6, and the Risk of Kidney Stones in MenJournal of Urology, VOL. 155, NO. 6, (1847-1851), Online publication date: 1-Jun-1996.
