- W1551872829 abstract "If two sensory modalities conflict with one another, for example, when viewing the hand through a prism, each will influence the other to a greater or lesser extent. Both cognitive and non-cognitive factors have been implicated in this mutual interaction which is referred to, in general, as “intersensory bias”. The non-cognitive variables involved in intersensory bias can be reduced to just one: The number (and perhaps weighting) of “amodal properties” shared by the two sensory modalities. Proposed cognitive variables include: (1) the degree to which the two sensory sources are familiarly related, (2) instructional and/or situational modifications of the observer's assumption that the two sensory inputs signify a single distal event (the “unity assumption”), and (3) the distribution of the observer's attention between the two modalities. However, before it can be concluded that these variables actually play a role in intersensory bias, care must be taken to avoid the possibility of post-perception (i.e., cognitive) response biases. It appears that the best means of doing this is the procedure of psychophysical staircases, introduced in this context by Bertelson and Aschersleben (1998)." @default.
