- W1552176145 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the biology of scallops in Scandinavia. Three species of commercial interest are Chlamys islandica, Aequipecten opercularis (L.), and Pecten maximus (L.) occur in the waters of northern Europe. The Iceland scallop has a northern boreal distribution. The other two species have a boreal-temperate distribution. The queen scallop—A. Opercularis— is fished in the Faroes and a fishery for the great scallop—P. Maximus—exists in Norway. C. Islandica is found in concentrations to be exploited on a large scale in Iceland, Greenland, and Norway. All three species have a commercial potential for aquaculture in Scandinavian waters, and considerable effort is being conducted on aquaculture development of P. Maximus in Norway. C Islandica and P. Maximus are focused in the chapter. C. Islandica occurs on hard coarse sediments, consisting of sand, gravel, shells, and occasionally clay and fine sand. These areas are often associated with strong currents, and the scallops are invariably attached to stones or shells. This species is highly fecund and the eggs are externally fertilized. In the Scandinavian waters, there is one spawning period per year, and it lasts from June to October." @default.
