- W1552334896 abstract "This chapter discusses the possible evolutionary significance of molecular regulation. The occurrence of genetic repression–depression phenomena, and their potential importance as prime regulators of genetic expression and cellular activity, has led to suggestions that the whole enzymic apparatus of a cell might be subjected to this sort of genetic regulation. If in evolutionary terms, a change from inducible regulation to constitutive production of a protein, or vice versa, eventually results in a change in stability of the corresponding mRNA, it is expected that, on occasion, the cell has had to pay a price for an advantage gained. An alteration in stability would be expected to be dependent on a change in base sequence. The testing of such ideas should await the development of more refined techniques for measuring the levels of many specific mRNAs, for determining nucleic acid structure, and for understanding how the structure and function are related in the nucleic acids and proteins." @default.
