- W1552556763 abstract "The expression of prophage genes following heteroimmune superinfection of lysogenic strains has been re-investigated; rec−‡ bacteria and red− int− phage λ have been used in order to eliminate the perturbing influence of recombination and prophage excision. This improvement has made possible, in most cases, a clear decision about which prophage genes are and which are not activated following heteroimmune superinfection. All the late genes tested (R, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, M, L, K, J) and the early gene P of the prophage are trans-activable in the presence of immunity, gene int only slightly, and genes N and red not. The situation is less clear for gene O. This paper does not give new information as concerns trans-inducibility of gene Q in the presence of immunity (but see >Couturier & Dambly, 1970, and manuscript in preparation). The results confirm the view that only part of the viral genome is under direct immunity control. A major chromosome segment, which includes all the late genes, is blocked indirectly; its expression requires activation by gene products the synthesis of which is under immunity control. A prophage segment including gene P is trans-activable in the presence of immunity, in spite of the fact that it belongs to a region which, as a whole, is negatively controlled by immunity. The results suggest that some transcription is initiated in the presence of the N-gene product at a site located in the y-cII region." @default.
