- W1553482092 abstract "Availability of biomarker measurements in dried blood spots has propelled forward several areas of human health research previously hindered by challenges of specimen collection by venipuncture or limitations of alternative specimen types. Underrepresented areas in our body of knowledge, including research targeting those groups least able or least likely to come for an appointment in a traditional research setting, and studies of the normal range of human biological variation between individuals and within individuals across time, stand to benefit immensely from availability of DBS methods. This is evident in the recent explosion of work in which socioeconomic and behavioral factors intersect with biomarker measurements, and studies of hard-to-reach populations coming from the global health community. We explore some important areas of human health research recently made possible by DBS methods, new directions likely to benefit in the near future, as well as the practical and ethical issues surrounding banking DBS specimens resulting from the rapid increase in large-scale collection efforts. We then describe our own experience with these techniques in two studies whose motivations and target populations illustrate the breadth of research potential introduced by dried blood spots. In the first, we discuss use of dried blood spot collection methods in resource-poor settings for micronutrient deficiency screening of a representative sample of populations as part of Demographic and Health Surveys in Uganda in 2006 and in Tanzania in 2010. In the second, very different example investigating excess male mortality, health disparities and their connection to health behaviors in US men, we measured a panel of biomarkers relevant to the primary public health problems of this population using DBS in combination with point-of-care testing." @default.
