- W1553629072 abstract "The exploration of sleep microstructure stems from three lines of research. The first is the work of the Strasbourg group, from the 1970s, which describes short episodes in sleep under the name of “les phases d’activation transitoire (PATs).” PATs are characterized by reappearance in the electroencephalography of either alpha or low-voltage fast frequency activity, increased electromyograpic tone, increased heart rate, and decreased finger pulse volume. They occur 50–100 times during one night in cycles of 4–5 min, even when external stimuli are excluded. The occurrence of PATs is inversely related to the depth of sleep. They occur more frequently in superficial than in deep sleep. The second source of research comes from the Budapest school studies on K-complexes and the so-called “synchronization-type” microarousals (MAs). K-complex phenomenon is a spontaneously occurring phasic event, and it is most easily distinguishable in stage 2, and it is elicited regularly by sensory stimuli. K-complexes are characteristically seen in stage 2 of slow-wave sleep. In deeper stages, high-voltage slow waves practically absorb K-complexes, but with averaging, the same kind of K-complex-like waves have been elicited in stage 3–4 sleep." @default.
