- W1554395078 abstract "Glacial cirques develop by strong glacial erosion at the foot of their headwalls, aided by water pressure variations and rotational flow. Positive feedbacks as they deepen further encourage these tendencies, and increase mass balance and length of glacial occupation. Frost weathering and nivation have been overemphasized; headwalls retreat largely by slope collapse after oversteepening. Cirques develop allometrically, with downward erosion rather slower than increases in length and width.Glaciers erode selectively. Landscapes of no erosion, selective linear erosion, and areal scouring reflect the thermal and kinematic behavior of ice sheets. Glacial troughs (U-shaped valleys) are the present or past channels of valley glaciers or ice streams. They tend to catenary, approximately parabolic, cross-profiles, and straighter courses than river valleys or channels. Long profiles are stepped and deeply concave. As greater discharges require either greater channel cross-sections or greater average velocity, as both are usually combined, troughs are calibrated to the most effective discharge, but this needs to continue for tens of thousands of years. Full trough development in strong rocks takes more than one major glacial cycle. Receding glaciers with lower basal velocities are less effective erosive agents and thus nested troughs are not produced; trough-side breaks of slope are likely to be of structural rather than chronologic significance." @default.
