Eddie S. Glaude Jr.'s In a Shade of Blue illuminates way pragmatic thought, especially that of philosopher John Dewey, could be especially helpful in addressing issues of identity politics and democratic functioning within African American communities. Glaude attempts to provide a theoretical framework for scholars of African American politics by insisting that a pragmatic lens was essential to provide both questions and answers to problems facing Americans in general, and African Americans in particular. Pragmatism, according to Glaude, could provide solutions for problems facing post-Soul generation of African Americans. Glaude utilizes the Blues as an analogy to represent musical essence of improvisation and perseverance that is then applied to African American politics. Glaude seeks to open up deliberative space within African American communities and throughout country for reflection on how we think about pressing matters confronting black communities and our nation. Emphasizing need for active involvement in democratic process, calling for participatory democracy and organized political activity on part of community members, Glaude places his discussion of pragmatism and problem of race in conversation with John Dewey, William James, and Charles S. Pierce as well as African American pragmatists W. E. B. Du Bois, Alain Locke, and Anna Julia Cooper. Self-described as a Deweyan pragmatist, Glaude seeks answers to problems facing African American community through use of pragmatic ideas and approaches, and dismisses what he considers static and flat characterizations of African American identity, history, and agency. Glaude begins by examining some of issues addressed in Hilary Putnam and Cornel West's critiques of Dewey. Glaude explained Putnam and West's criticisms as failures to appreciate value of contingency and conflict in Dewey's philosophy of action. Using Toni Morrison's novel Beloved (1987) to illustrate certain aspects of African American experience, Glaude argues that choices are not always morally compatible with right and good. The tensions between good and evil are conceived as inconsistencies that define nature of human existence. He regards identity formation for African Americans as a by-product of tragic environment in United States. Glaude emphasizes two main responses to question of black identity: archaeological approach, found in black nationalist thought of Martin Delany, Marcus Garvey, and Maulana Karenga that posits a racial self; and pragmatist historicist approach, which defines identity as consequence of engaging in problem-solving activity. …" @default.
