- W155523250 abstract "The evolution of Camus' work, which he likened to different stages in the development of godless hero,1 leads ultimately to the elusive dialogist of La Chute.2 Camus himself, as well as the many critics who have studied this enigmatic work, has offered only fragmentary sugges? tions as to the way one should envision the central figure of Clamence. Yet, in spite of all that has been said of him, the hero remains puzzle. This study is an attempt to fit the pieces together and to blend, for the first time, the seemingly dissimilar traits of Camus' hero into coherent, composite portrait. This is not to say that critics have failed to isolate some of the in? dividual traits of Clamence: Roger Quilliot and Rene Girard, for instance, suggest an autobiographical link between the hero and author and, with Thomas Hanna, regard La Chute as sort of con? fessional narrative.3 F. W. Locke, however, sees the protagonist as satanical figure,4 while Hanna also sees him as Christ-figure.5 Accord? ing to Germaine Bree, the story presents us with a modern Adam.6 Adele King, with Jean-Paul Sartre in mind, suggests rather that La Chute is a symbol of the French intellectual's flirt with Marxism.7 As if to add to the confusion, the hero himself warns us of his ambiguity: he is stranger we meet in bar, two-faced, charming whose calling card reads: Jean-Baptiste Clamence, play actor (C, 1497-98). Although the critics have deflected Camus' hero from Janus to Jesus, from Satan to Sartre, from Actor to Adam, they have failed to account for the pris? matic transparency which, as I intend to show, constitutes the very core of his adopted attitude towards life. Clearly discernible to any reader of La Chute is the fact that Clamence was once highly successful Parisian attorney. He defended noble causes?orphans and widows?and found great deal of fulfill? ment, if not infinite self-satisfaction, in his work (C, 1482). When we" @default.
