- W1555340931 abstract "The regime of flow has a profound influence on the rate of transport of heat, mass and momentum. Reynolds has shown that laminar flow is prevalent at very low Reynolds number until a critical value is reached then transition and turbulence predominate. The problem is that the critical Reynolds number varies greatly with geometry. It is 2100 for pipe flow, 1 for falling spheres and poorly determined for rotating agitators. It is argued that modern view of turbulent coherent structures provides a more rational method of classifying flow regimes that has a direct link to the physical structure of the flow field. This understanding in turns leads to better modelling strategies, particularly when computer fluid dynamics (CFD) packages are used. The key in this visualisation is that the ejections of wall fluid in the bursting process disturb the flow beyond the wall layer and result in the emergence of two new layers in the flow field: the law of the wake and log-law layers. The wall layer represents the extent of penetration of viscous momentum into the main flow and remains constant once it has reached a critical value at the end of the laminar regime. The identification of the three flow regimes: laminar, transition and fully turbulent is conveniently achieved by monitoring the emergence of these three layers." @default.
