- W1555364935 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the properties of ferroxplana-type hexagonal ferrites—BaMe 2 Fe 16 O 27 (W-type), Ba 2 Me 2 Fe 12 O 22 (Y-type), Ba 3 Me 2 Fe 24 O 41 (Z-type), Ba 2 Me 2 Fe 28 O 46 (X-type), and Ba 4 Me 2 Fe 36 O 60 (U-type). The processes for producing the ferroxplana-type compounds are very similar to those for M-type compounds. However, accurate procedures based on the phase equilibrium are necessary to obtain the ferroxplana-type compounds, because their chemical compositions are very complex. In particular, it is very difficult to produce a crystallographically pure compound containing various amounts of ferrous iron. To obtain a homogeneous W-compound, the samples must be sintered at 1250 °C to 1400 °C in an atmosphere with a partial oxygen pressure between 2 × 10 –4 and 2 × 10 –1 atm. Lotgering evolved a new method for making a sintered crystal-oriented ferroxplana compound. The advantage of crystal orientation is evident from the fact that the permeability of its compounds can be about three times larger than that of non-oriented compounds. This method differs essentially in the formation mechanism from that for the M-type compound. A paste or thick suspension consisting of BaFe 12 O 19 powder and raw oxides such as ZnO or CoO is poured into a die and then introduced into a static magnetic field." @default.
