- W1556084182 abstract "This research is motivated by the significant loss of productivity experienced by the average operating system (OS) user as a result of the syntactic inflexibility, obscureness, and relative linguistic inconsistencies of existing OS command languages.A formal framework is introduced for developing natural language interfaces to operating systems (NLIOSs). This framework consists of a generation environment (NALIGE) and a methodology for developing NALIGE input specifications. These specifications describe the linguistic characteristics of a NLIOS in terms of the semantic domain, the natural language descriptions, and the OS command language realizations being handled. The OS semantic domain is defined as a 2-tuple consisting of a set of conceptual entities and a set of conceptual actions. It is argued that any OS environment which offers combination and abstraction mechanisms has an infinite semantic domain. This domain can be viewed from two distinct levels, namely the high-level linguistic stratum and the low-level linguistic stratum. Given this linguistic barrier which converts elements of high-level linguistic stratum to the corresponding elements in the low-level linguistic stratum. The presented formal framework utilizes a powerful knowledge representation formalism, namely augmented semantic grammars (ASGs), which consists of a set of context-free production rules, a set of arbitrary actions and a set of entry conditions. Due to their equivalence to Turing machines, ASGs are capable of representing any natural or artificial language which can be accepted by a computing device. Finally, the introduced development methodology provides a NLIOS designer with a collection of techniques, tools, and knowledge-base specification languages to assist in the identification and representation of the lexical, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic aspects of a given application. The computational aspects of this methodology are incorporated into the NALIGE environment, thus producing a user-interface management system which successfully supports the design, automatic generation, and maintenance of linguistically consistent NLIOS applications." @default.
