- W155637601 abstract "This country report provides an overview of the recent developments and changes in highway geometric design policy and practice in Poland. These developments are related to development and reconstruction of the Polish road network, which is conducted also thanks resources from the European Union. Under construction is a network of motorways, express roads, by-passes and other national and regional roads. Main aims of the recent developments are: (1) increasing capacity and traffic performance of the basic network by constructing of new motorways and express roads, taking also into consideration various environmental limitations and contraints, (2) improvement of road safety. Very important in transformation of the road network is a road infrastructure safety management, particularly implementation of the road safety audit, as several new designs included errors made by designers having often poor road safety knowledge. Road safety audits should identify unsafe features of road infrastructure projects. These two procedures were recently implemented in Poland. Access management is very important factor determining traffic safety and progression of traffic flows. This factor play now more important role in guidelines for road design and planning. Therefore the paper gives recommendations for access control and some research results of its impact on road safety. Improvements and changes are related to intersections, cross sections of two-lane roads with paved shoulders, one carriageway four lane roads 1x4 lanes (without median) and include: - construction of small roundabouts with various types of right-turn by-passes, which extend life of one-lane roundabouts, construction of new forms of one-lane roundabouts including “8” shape, cigar shape, double small and turbine roundabouts, construction of signalized roundabouts in urban and suburban areas with new vehicle actuated signals – very efficient with regards to capacity, construction of contra-curves on entry sections of intersections in order to reduce entry speed, construction of turbine roundabouts without and with traffic signals. Recent developments of the two-lane roads (1x2) cross sections with paved shoulders on rural roads, very popular in Poland in last 30 years (used originally by pedestrian, cyclists), include reconstructions of several sections of these rather dangerous roads (due to very risky overtaking) particularly sections going through villages and small towns. The new cross sections include: introduction of left turning lanes (within the existing available width), speed reducing measures (narrowings, staggerings) and changes in use of the paved shoulders providing protection of pedestrians. Other changes on these roads include change of slow-moving lanes initially built for pedestrian traffic into the overtaking lanes in the middle of cross-section." @default.
