- W1556422017 abstract "Brooke Joyce(1973- ) a stone, a leaf, an unfound door (for SATB [soprano, alto, tenor, bass], choir, unaccompanied) Text from the proem to Look Homeward, Angel by Thomas Wolfe. Performance time: 12 minutes. Born and raised in East Lansing, Michigan, Brooke Joyce holds degrees in theory and composition from Princeton university, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and Lawrence University. He attended summer courses with Joan Tower and Magnus Lindberg, and in 1997 he traveled to Wales on a Kittredge Educational Grant to study with Alun Hoddinott. His music has been performed by the Indianapolis Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony, Relache Ensemble, Brentano Quartet, Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, Nash Ensemble, and St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic. In addition to his concert music, the composer has collaborated on several musical theater works with playwright Frederick Gaines, including Unbekannt--a musical based on the life of the famous Anastasia pretender, Anna Anderson--and An Imaginary Line, based on the book Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer. (1) Joyce is the recipient of the Joseph Bearns Prize, the Wayne Peterson Prize, the Darius Milhaud Award, and many citations from the National Federation of Music Clubs and ASCAP He teaches theory, history, and composition at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and is a faculty member at the Walden School, a summer music festival for young composers in New Hampshire. For the 2008-09 season, Joyce was composer-in-residence with the Water City Chamber Orchestra in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He also enjoys playing the piano and organ, reading Edward Gorey books, and exploring the outdoors. (2) Asked what motivated him to write his choral piece based on the proem to Look Homeward, Angel, Joyce offered the following remarks: Since 2000, I have taught at the Walden School in New Hampshire, a summer music festival for young composers. All students and faculty at Walden sing in a mixed choir, and in 2001 we sang Johannes Brahms's Geistliches Lied. What is most remarkable to me about this piece is that, despite its simple compositional premise (a slowly unfolding double-canon), this motet is able to express a wide range of vivid emotions. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Also in 2000, I began a graduate program in composition at Princeton University. As part of my general exam during my second year of study, I was asked to compose a work in response to a preexisting work, preferably by a composer I admired but didn't feel particularly close to, musically speaking. For me, Brahms fit the bill perfectly--I, along with many other musicians and listeners, hold Brahms's compositional technique in high regard. Perhaps no other composer in the nineteenth century can match his craft, particularly with regard to counterpoint. Emotionally, however, I often find Brahms to be rather austere, and his use of orchestration and formal design sometimes leaves me feeling unsatisfied. My experience as a singer with Geistliches Lied began to change my perception of Brahms, however, and I decided to use this piece as a model for a new composition. My experience with the work of Thomas Wolfe is fairly limited, but I knew enough about him to feel a connection. My wife grew up in Charlottesville, Virginia, and I have traveled throughout the southeastern United States with her. One of my favorite cities is Asheville, and I think it was while visiting that city that I first encountered Wolfe's work and biography. The prose poem that opens Look Homeward, Angel struck me at the time as being particularly musical in its construction, lyricism, and phrasing. All of these elements came together in 2002 when I composed my choral work, a stone, a leaf, an unfound door. My intention was to create a work that mirrored the simplicity and clarity of Geistliches Lied, sometimes through similar contrapuntal devices. The work is for unaccompanied choir. It was premiered in April 2002 by the Princeton University Chapel Choir, directed by Penna Rose. …" @default.
