- W1556444585 abstract "This chapter explores how syntactic bootstrapping might work—the aspects of sentence structure that are meaningful to young children, the semantic information that sentence structures provide, and the degree of syntactic knowledge that give children some guidance in verb learning. Some of the evidence that children can use sentences to guide verb learning are reviewed, and other evidence are considered in relation to several possible mechanisms for syntactic bootstrapping. Little or no language-specific syntactic knowledge is needed to give the child an initial sentence-structural guide for interpreting verbs. Instead, based on a partial or presyntactic description of sentences, children can obtain information about verb meaning essentially by structural analogy, aligning a sentence representation with a conceptual representation that shares its skeletal structural properties. For example, a child could arrive at different interpretations of transitive and intransitive verbs for the same event by aligning a transitive verb with a conceptual relation between two participants and an intransitive verb with a conceptual predicate involving only a single participant. The chapter also explores how learners might construct the simple structured representations of sentences needed to use this simple mechanism for syntactic bootstrapping." @default.
