The chapter concentrates on the mesoscopic methods with a particular focus on small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) on liposomal dispersions and highly aligned lipid films. Here, the main idea is to point out how structure and bending elasticity are interdependent and how one can get a hold on mechanical and structural membrane parameters at once. The chapter demonstrate how temperature, chain length, and lipid species influence the flexibility and structure of bilayers. It also discusses the mechanical and structural properties of fluid bilayers and demonstrated how “macroscopic” as well as “mesoscopic” methods complement each other in the retrieval of material parameters." @default.
