- W155867930 abstract "Samples of tetrahydrofuran (THF), styrene, and mixtures of these two compounds were freed from air in high vacuum and were irradiated at - 196 un. Concent 85% C by Co/sup 60/ at a dose from 0.14 to 6 x 10/sup 6/ rads. Polycrystalline THF irradiated at - 196 un. Concent 85% C showed an electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum having a 5-component, superfine structure due to the action of an unpaired electron with four protons. The ratio of intensities of the components approached a binomial distribution at - 160 un. Concent 85% C, and the resulting EPR spectrum could be assigned to a cation radical of THF with the positive charge on the oxygen atom. On irradiating a solution of styrene in THF (2.18 mol/l) at--196 un. Concent 85% C with a dose of 0.14 x 10/sup 6/ rads, it was found that the form of the EPR signal depends on the power level of the signal generator. A saturated signal was observed at 5 Mw, and an unresolved singlet was obtained at a low power of 5 Mw. The signal form of gamma -irradiated, pure THF did not depend on the irradiation dose (from 0.14 to 6.0 x 10/supmore » 6/ rads) in the absence of saturation, but the intensity was proportional to the dose. A study of the irradiation of mixtures of styrene and THF showed that a saturated signal is obtained at a lower power level for a lower irradiation dose. The power of the signal generator was a factor of 20 less at a dose of 0.14 x 10/sup 6/ rads as compared to a dose of 0.84 x 10/sup 6/ rads. Illumination of an irradiated styrene solution in THF with light from a mercury vapor lamp resulted in the disappearance of one of the characteristic singlet lines, and was proof of the formation of two radicals during the gamma -irradiation of this system. The variation in signal form as a function of power level of the signal generation can be explained by the different times of relaxation and cross-relaxation of these two radicals.
