- W1559367114 abstract "Objective: To evaluate the oral conditions as regards caries experience and oral hygiene conditions in children with spastic tetraparetic cerebral palsy (STCP) receiving either oral feeding or nutrition via gastrostomy tube.Method: 36 children with oral-motor function aged 2 to 7 years (mean age = 5.2 ± 1.8), who were under dental treatment at the UNIFESP/EPM’s Lar Escola Sao Francisco Rehabilitation Center, Sao Paulo, SP, Brazil and presented oral-motor function values £19 (severely compromised, according to the Orofacial Motor Function Assessment Scale) were enrolled in the study. The children were assigned to 2 groups, according to the feeding route: oral feeding (G1; n=20) and nutrition via gastrostomy tube (G2; n=16). Both groups were assessed as regards caries experience and the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (SOHI). The results were analyzed statistically by the Student’s t, Chi-square and Mann-Whitney tests, with significance level set at p<0.05.Results: Regarding caries experience, G1 presented significantly larger values (p=0.0415) than G2. With respect to the SOHI, G2 presented significantly larger values than G1 (p=0.0401).Conclusion: Children with STCP who have severely compromised oral-motor function and receive oral feeding present a higher risk of having dental caries than do children with nutrition via gastrostomy tube of having periodontal disease. However, both groups require preventive measures to maintain a good oral health statutes as well as an individual-based dental treatment, always respecting the patient’s systemic and dental conditions." @default.
