- W1559932013 abstract "Plant diseases are responsible for the loss of at least 10% of global food production, representing a threat to food security. Microbial attacks can represent minor infection causing solely a reduction of plant-growth capacities or can be the origin of much more severe damage leading to plant death in the worst case. To prevent and manage these diseases, producers become increasingly dependent on agro-chemicals, especially over the past few decades, as agricultural production has intensified. However, despite the great effectiveness and ease of utilization of these products, their use or misuse has led to problems associated with significant pollution of soils and groundwater reservoirs, the accumulation of undesirable chemical residues in the food chain, the emergence of fungicide-resistant strains of pathogens, not to mention health concerns for consumers. Consequently, nowadays there is an increasing demand from consumers and authorities for safer, rational, sustainable and eco-friendly strategies. This has resulted not only in stricter regulations concerning pesticide use, its commercialization and production but also in the development of alternative strategies, including genetic adaptation of crops, modification of cultural practices and use of bio-pesticides. Some microorganisms are able to colonize the soil surrounding plant roots, the rhizosphere, making them come under the influence of plant roots. Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) generally refers to a group of soil and rhizosphere free-living bacteria colonizing roots in a competitive environment and exerting a beneficial effect on plant growth. The beneficial effect of PGPR on plant growth involves the ability to act as phyto-stimulators or biofertilizers. PGPR could enhance crop yield through nutrient uptake and plant growth regulators. PGPR could also act as biocontrol agents by the production of antibiotics, triggering induced local or systemic resistance, or preventing the deleterious effects of xenobiotics by degradation and acting as rhizo-remediators. Sustainable agriculture, based on environmentally-friendly methods, tends to use bacteria as tools that could as a by-product reduce the use of chemicals. It is advantageous for sustainable agriculture as introduced bacteria could act both as biofertilizers and as biopesticides. In this way, PGPR could constitute a group of bacteria of great importance." @default.
