- W1559948265 abstract "Summary In this first of two installments, Rahner's theology of death is confronted with Collopy's. Whereas Rahner provides an “answer” to death (not by resolving its mystery, nor by downgrading its pain and loss, but by articulating the dimension in which any fundamental question of human existence is ultimately involved), Collopy contends that there is no answer at all, and rejects what he considers to be romanticizing and gratuitous assertions. Of course, whatever religious assertions there are should be valid inferences from a particular understanding of present reality in its total or ultimate dimension. Once something is taken into a religious understanding, it is concerned with the ultimate condition that underlies existence. Death does not merely bring out the fragility of life, but is, at the same time, judged by the very life it limits. Basically the disagreement revolves around the notion of fulfillment, and whether or not death is a “natural” event. Here again, Rahner and Collopy are at odds. But Collopy as well insists on the relevance of Christ's resurrection, and sees death as the ultimate measure for any faith confession about transcendence, God, Christ. The difference is that Rahner interprets death as an act, Collopy as a passive submission." @default.
