- W1560907817 abstract "Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Systems are the preferred choice of transport planners in developing countries promoting affordable public transport in urban areas. For the first time in 2002, BRT was conceptualized for the Indian capital, New Delhi. Samarthyam, National Centre for Accessible Environments, advocated for the incorporation of Universal Design features during the master planning process itself, visualizing BRT as an important tool on developing the city’s accessible transit and urban infrastructure. Samarthyam collaborated with BRT stakeholders and service providers to provide target user group perspectives to promote inclusive mobility in transit systems. Focusing on essential components of bus, Bus-Q-Shelter (BQS) and pedestrian infrastructure, accessibility standards were developed with respective stakeholders and service providers. Low floor bus prototypes were tested for determining manageable gaps while docking. After extensive field tests, Samarthyam recommended a manual hinged instead of hydraulic retractable ramp; seat belts, headrest and a user-friendly clamping system for wheelchairs and lower stop request button. The BQS height was raised to align it with the bus chassis i.e. 390mm high. Details such as ramps with handrails and the engineering configuration of tactile paving were worked out with the architects during the implementation process. Reconstruction of pedestrian infrastructure, based on the developed accessibility standards, led to the provision of wider footpaths with tactile paving, adequate illumination, Table Top crossings, median refuges and designated hawker & resting spaces. Monitoring during the implementation process and post commissioning reviews were undertaken to iron out shortcomings and glitches. The first stretch of 5.8 km BRT corridor is operational with accessible low floor buses, BQS and inclusive pedestrian infrastructure. This is now a model for developing transit infrastructure in several other Indian cities." @default.
