- W1561340253 abstract "This chapter discusses the underlying philosophy and special nature of capstone design activities utilizing authentic industrial projects as a teaching mechanism for process synthesis and analysis. In capstone design projects, teams of students work on carefully selected industrially sponsored projects. Each project has an academic as well as an industrial coach. The team consists of typically four undergraduate students; however, graduate students have participated from time to time as team members or academic advisors and teams have varied from three to seven persons. These projects require the application of sound concepts of scientific and engineering principles, teamwork, and project management to accomplish team goals. Important benefits of the Capstone Design Program are: (1) valuable interaction with interdisciplinary student design teams working on projects that are important to the participating company. (2) Access to faculty who have expertise in technical areas related to specific projects. (3) Significantly improving the education of the next generation of engineers. (4) Visibility in identifying and recruiting new engineers." @default.
