- W1562399904 abstract "This thesis is divided in two main parts. The first partcompares and contrasts early experiments with non-slavelabour in Cuba and Sao Paulo. The second part considersprojects for the gradual abolition of slavery and thetransition to labour. The objective is to examinehow Cuban and Brazilian planters solved the problem oflabour supply triggered by a rapid growth of plantationexports during the nineteenth century. At this time sugarand coffee plantations came to characterize economicdevelopment in the two areas. Continued expansion wasthreatened by international pressures to end the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Challenged by international demandsto terminate the African trade Cuba and Brazil soughtto solve the labour problem by means of immigration. Fromthe mid-century until the end of slavery in the 1880s,planters would experiment with several labour systems, involving a variety of labour relations. Besides slaves,Europeans, Chinese, Mexican Indians, Canary Islanders, and domestic workers (white and coloured) would beemployed on the plantations. Substituting labourfor slave labour was not simply a matter of laboursupply. For Cuba there was the question of therelationship with Spain and its consequences for thedefense of slavery and the impact on immigration. ForBrazil there was the question of forging a nationalidentity. What would be the place of slaves, freedmen andimmigrants in the new nation. In both regions theseconsiderations had a racial dimension. Also planters wereanxious to secure a cheap disciplined workforce. Whatlabour system would best meet these requirements? As this thesis demonstrates this was a time ofexperimentation. From the first, in Brazil alternativesupplies of labour were regarded as a means of transitionto labour. In Cuba new supplies of workers wereviewed as complementing slavery. But the firstexperiments with non-slave labour affected the processesof the abolition of slavery and the transition to freelabour while the meaning of free labour” and “transition” also changed over time." @default.
