- W1562717470 abstract "This chapter focuses on gap junctions (GJs) and their functions in cells of the central nervous system (CNS). The main GJs in the CNS have the smallest single-channel conductance of any type described. The idea that GJs are involved in synchronization of neuronal firing was brought forward with first reports demonstrating neuronal electrotonic interactions, and presently, their role in the generation, synchronization, and shaping of neuronal network activity is widely accepted. A fundamental aspect of GJ coupling is that it can be modulated rapidly, and thus, the sensitivity of cells to signals from their coupled counterparts can be adjusted. A much slower but an equally important form of activity-dependent modulation of GJ conductance involves G-protein-mediated signaling cascades and phosphorylation. Changes in intracellular pH driven by intense neuronal activity can modify GJ-coupled neuronal communication; specifically, intracellular alkalinization enhances coupling through certain GJ types and thus could boost neuronal network activity." @default.
