- W1564602912 abstract "Sir, Thank you for your comments on BJOG editorial policy. It appears from your letter that you are not convinced of the efficacy of complementary therapies. However, it is estimated by Professor Edzard Ernst (Director of Complementary Medicine, Peninsula Medical School, Plymouth, UK) that the annual expenditure on such therapies in the UK alone is £1.6 billion (http://www.wellcome.ac.uk/en/pain/microsite/medicine1.html). This is not just money spent privately by individuals; in February 2010, the British House of Commons Science and Technology Committee criticised the annual expenditure by the UK National Health Service (NHS) of £4 million on homeopathy on the basis that it lacked a convincing evidence base (http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200910/cmselect/cmsctech/45/45.pdf). This view was subsequently backed by doctors attending the British Medical Association (BMA) annual conference in June (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10449430). Acupuncture is also available on the NHS for some conditions, and is even suggested as an option for the treatment of nonspecific low back pain by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) (http://www.nice.org.uk/nicemedia/live/11887/44334/44334.pdf): ‘9.1.1 Consider offering a course of acupuncture needling comprising up to a maximum of 10 sessions over a period of up to 12 weeks’. It seems that many members of the general public do not regard the absence of evidence for efficacy as equivalent to evidence of absence of effectiveness. We will not be able to discourage them from using techniques such as acupuncture until there is good evidence that they do not work – and the best evidence is provided by randomised controlled trials. ▮" @default.
