- W1564698349 abstract "Papers on the prevalence of IBS have addressed different populations from all over the world. Older studies applied the Manning criteria and were done in the Western world. Papers from Asia have become more frequent in recent years following the publication of the second and third versions of the Rome criteria; however, the type of diagnostic criteria applied does not appear to exert a major effect on the estimated prevalence. The reported prevalence of IBS has ranged from less than 3% to more than 30%, mostly between 5 and 15 %. In studies from Europe and North America there has been a trend to a female predominance which was not apparent in the rest of the world. Around 40% of subjects reporting IBS symptoms sought medical help. No clear picture emerges in regard to IBS subtypes (diarrhoea-predominant, constipation-predominant and mixed). In more than half of subjects the symptoms remained more or less stable over years. Exposure to a bacterial gastrointestinal infection is a clear risk factor for IBS. Other risk factors, such as stress and major life events, social and genetic factors, are less potent." @default.
