ABSTRACT: Atomic absorption spectrophotometry was used to assess the bioavailable contents of zinc, iron, manganese, copper, chromium, cadmium, lead, and nickel in surface sediments taken at a depth between 10 and 20cm from 10 sampling stations at Laguna de Caripo and 10 sampling stations at Laguna de Chacopata. The diameter of the particles, the total organic content, and the pH of the sediments have an important influence on the bioavailable levels of trace metals, as evidenced at the end of the rainy season in November 2003, at the peak of the dry season in March 2004, and at the onset of the rainy season in July 2004. The mean concentration of Fe, Zn, Cd, Cr, and Ni (62.15, 5.13, 0.05, 0.15, and 0.04 mg/kg of dried mass, respectively) was higher in Bocaripo than that of the same elements in Chacopata, where Pb, Mn, and Cu yielded higher concentrations (6.30, 5.72, and 0.32 mg/kg of dried mass, respectively). Significant statistical differences were observed for the Fe, Pb, and Mn of the Bocaripo Lagoon as seen from one climatic period to another, whereas Cr and Mn were statistically different among sampling stations, a phenomenon also observed in the Chacopata Lagoon for the concentrations of Fe, Cu, and Zn. The bioavailable content of Fe in the Bocaripo Lagoon could represent a potential polluting risk as, in very reducing environments, it can affect the mobility of other metals towards the solution by creating oxidizing conditions that prompt a strong acidification response. Key words: Trace metals, silts, coastal lagoon." @default.
